IS POLYGAMY NEXT? Maggie comments
Well, I still don't know how Jonathan Rauch would answer the two questions I put to him below (Is it cruel to deny love to a husband in a humdrum marriage who falls in love with someone else? Is a baby a good reason to marry a decent boyfriend you would not otherwise want to marry?); But I do think we have E.J.'s answer: "marriage is not a lifetime labor contract, as it was for our ancestors, but a pledge of shared love—whose presence creates and whose absence unmakes a marriage." It sounds like a high ideal. But in practice it means subordinating the interests of one's own babies to romantic love. And it is not an ethic by which a marriage culture can be sustained. |
