GENDER AND MARRIAGE: Maggie v. Sam

Dear, dear Sam:

Whether or not marriage is about emotional satisfactions is not of course the issue between us. I certainly would not say that the reason marriage is a universal human institution is because it is so emotionally satisfying.

Here is your argument as I understand it: Marriage is "about" women, in some sense, you deny to be emotional but prefer the word primal. So in order to be marriage, one of the male partners would have to "be" the woman who is being protected by the act of marriage. If I follow your argument. And one of the women in a lesbian couple would "be" the male who is commiting the act of protecting women we call marriage.

Marriage is the act of male surrender to the conditions of female sexuality, for the purpose of protecting women?

Let me pause here and see what you think about this formulation.

Maggie
