ANNOYED AT POLITICIANS: David Benkof

In the last few days we've seen some of the worst examples of political talk about SSM since last August, when Arnold Schwarzenegger said "I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman."

First we had the State of the Union, with its vague reference to "the constitutional process" rather than a firm indication of what President Bush thinks should happen in the wake of Goodridge. But the sentence that rankled me most was: "I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization." I'm pretty sure that W. meant "I believe we should respect gay and lesbian individuals as we nonetheless..." If that's what he meant, then on that point I agree with him wholeheartedly. I just wish he had been "big tent" enough to actually say the G and L words.

Then last night we had the Democratic debate with John Edwards misinforming the nation, repeatedly, about what the Defense of Marriage Act did, and none of the journalists or other candidates bothering to correct him.

I know this issue is complicated and seems to have political death written all over it for both Republicans and Democrats. And not every discussion can be as reasoned as the ones we have here. But can't our politicians do at least a little better?
