IS MARRIAGE A RIGHT? EdgeWise
EdgeWise's website I believe we do have a right to marry whomever we love who loves us back and consents to marry us, but your three choices are a bit off. For instance, you imply that, in marriage, love and sexual attraction entirely seperable, where it seems to me a person needs both to desire to marry someone. Although all people are able to feel non-romantic love towards many people (friends, family, etc.), most of us do not feel a desire to marry all those people. Similarly, we are often sexually attracted to people we have no desire to marry. You claim that a right to marry the person you love would require society to allow incest, but I'm not sure why this is so. In incest, there are often complicating issues, such as a difficulty in determining whether it is truly consensual and not coerced. Age limits on marriage (must be 18), mental competency limits, etc. all are due to complicating questions of true consent and other issues. |
