POLLAGE: FIRMER STANCE ON RELIGION ISSUES: From the Phila. Inquirer

Public support for compromise on hot-button issues such as gay marriage and abortion has fallen across the board in recent years, and particularly among regular churchgoers, according to a new national survey.

Public Agenda, a nonpartisan research group, conducted the survey to assess whether attitudes about religion in public life had shifted since 2000, when it did a similar poll. ...

In 2000, 84 percent of the respondents agreed with the statement, "Even elected officials who are deeply religious sometimes have to make compromises and set their convictions aside to get results while in government."

That level fell to 74 percent in 2004, with sharper drops recorded among those who attend worship services weekly (82 percent in 2000, 63 percent in 2004) and evangelicals (79 percent in 2000, 63 percent in 2004). The level for Catholics fell from 85 percent to 78 percent. ...

On gay rights, 54 percent supported compromise, compared with 60 percent in 2000. Among weekly churchgoers, the figure dropped from 57 percent to 39 percent. The decline was from 75 percent to 56 percent for Catholics; among evangelicals, there was no change, with support for compromise staying at 36 percent.
