Kramer, Stenberg unite on one issue
BY HENRY J. CORDES

"All three Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate support a federal constitutional amendment barring legal recognition of gay marriage. But that didn't stop one candidate from taking a shot at another Monday.

In an unusual joint press conference, both David Kramer and Don Stenberg stood side by side with representatives of a socially conservative family organization to urge support for such an amendment.

The third Republican, Pete Ricketts, was in New York but issued a statement indicating support for an amendment to define marriage as "between one man and one woman."

Ricketts, a former executive of Ameritrade, was attending a meet-and-greet event with friends and former business associates held in a new condominium his father purchased near Central Park.

Kramer noted the absence, saying, "He's spent millions of dollars on TV ads talking about 'Nebraska values,' but when he had a chance to stand up for them, he's not to be found."

Family First, a socially conservative organization that is the Nebraska affiliate of Focus on the Family, is holding a series of press conferences to rally support for the amendment. Speakers Monday stood in front of a banner urging Nebraska Sens. Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel to vote for the measure.

Both Nelson, a Democrat whom Ricketts, Kramer and Stenberg hope to unseat in November, and Hagel, a Republican, have said they oppose gay marriage but don't support a federal amendment and that the issue should be left to the states. . ."
